My favorite Hot Chocolate

Jump to Recipe

This hot chocolate is thick, not too sweet, and silky on the tongue. It is perfect for a chilly day when you need something delicious and warm. Only three ingredients needed for this drink.

I love hot chocolate. I mean what’s not to love? It’s sweet, chocolatey, creamy, and always served with whipped cream and mini marshmallows.

This can easily be made dairy-free with non-dairy milk. I recommend one with a high-fat content (above 7g) and a neutral flavor. Keep in mind that if you get it pre-sweetened, you will need to adjust the amount of sugar you add.

I top it with vegan mini-marshmallows and cocowhip (coconut whipped cream) to make it extra indulgent.

Ingredients

  • Non-dairy milk. Use one that is creamy and delicious.
  • Cocoa powder.
  • Sugar. You can use maple syrup or agave or use granulated sugar. I used organic cane sugar.

Optional Toppings:

  • Marshmallows. I love the Dandies brand.
  • Whipped cream. Like cocowhip or non-dairy Rediwhip. This with a little shaved chocolate on top is heaven.
  • Shaved Dark Chocolate.

Procedure

This is a really quick recipe.

In a pot, I heat the milk, cocoa powder, and sugar. I whisk it in and wait for it to start to steam, then I taste it.

The amount of sugar and cocoa powder will depend on how sweet your non-dairy milk is. For a sweetened one, I use 2 tbsp of cocoa powder and 2 tbsp of sugar. For a non-sweetened one, I use 1 1/2 tbsp of cocoa powder and 3 tbsp sugar.

But that it just me. I have a bit of a sweet tooth.

That is why it’s important to taste it.

Once it’s perfect, pass through a fine-meshed sieve to grab any clumps of cocoa powder into a mug. This recipe is enough for ONE cup of hot chocolate, so double or triple it for more servings.

Top with marshmallows, whipped cream, or any topping you like on your hot chocolate.
