This French Hot chocolate is a Parisian favorite and it could be yours too. Only 5 ingredients and is the perfect warm drink for a cozy winter night.
Hot chocolate may be my favorite warm drink. It’s literally liquid chocolate. But sometimes I want it thick and fudgy. It’s a different experience and really coats the inside of your mouth with liquid goodness.
This is not an everyday drink, but it’s so easy to make, that this could be a good way to end a dinner or impress some friends. It’s definitely a crowd-pleaser.

Ingredients for French Hot Chocolate
- Chocolate Bars I think Dark chocolate or semi-sweet works best for this recipe. Look for ones between 40-60% cocoa
- Whole milk for melting the chocolate. You can also try soy milk.
- Heavy Cream is thicker and has more fat content. You can also add more milk if you don’t want to use heavy cream. I like to use the leftover heavy cream for whipped cream topping.
- Brown sugar. Is used for sweetness. Add according to how sweet you like it and also depending on how bitter your chocolate is.
- Vanilla extract

Materials
- 8 oz high quality dark chocolate bars
- 1 3/4 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 2-4 tbsp brown sugar depending on taste
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- whipped cream for serving optional
Instructions
- In a saucepan, heat your cream and milk. Once warm, add your brown sugar and mix until dissolved.
- Cut your chocolate into smaller pieces. This will help melt.
- Once the milk is hot, add your chocolate and lower the heat. Mix until the chocolate is melted and slightly thickened. Add your vanilla extract.
- This chocolate is supposed to be thicker than traditional hot chocolate from the powder. If it's too thick, add milk. If too thin, then simmer it until thickened. Once done, ladle into mugs and enjoy with whipped cream on top.
