Vegan Jamaican Beef Patty

This Vegan Jamaican Beef Patty is spicy and delicious. It’s a hand pie that can be made ahead of time and stored in the freezer. The flavors are perfect for an anytime snack.

There is something so satisfying about a hand pie. A delicious buttery crust enveloping a warm filling. Either warm or cold.

Jamaican beef patties are known for their iconic yellow color, thanks to turmeric powder, and spicy beef filling filled with scotch bonnet peppers native to Jamaica. It’s one of their oldest recipes that’s enriched with history and that makes me love it even more.

I like making a big batch to have it in the freezer. Then on days I don’t want to cook, I pop a few into the toaster oven and have it ready in 15 minutes. It’s truly worth it to make it from home.

Ingredients for Vegan Jamaican Beef Patty

  • Ap flour for the crust. I haven’t tried any substitutes.
  • Curry powder. Usually, Jamaican curry powder is used. If you can’t find it, try using Indian Curry powder. It will give you similar results.
  • Turmeric for that iconic yellow color.
  • Vegan butter. For the crust, I would use vegan butter sticks, not the tub. It holds up better at room temperature.
  • Vegan ground. Different brands will give you slightly different results. I used Impossible. It has a more neutral flavor.
  • Scotch Bonnet peppers for heat. You can also use jalapeños or omit it altogether.
  • Vegetable broth for moistening the “beef”. Use a high-quality one. or a bouillon mixed with water.
  • Breadcrumbs to soak up any excess moisture during baking and to bind the filling together to wrap it up in the crust.

How to fold the Vegan Jamaican Beef Patty

Roll out the dough as thin as ou can until it makes a rough rectangular shape. You shouldn’t need flour. It’s a pretty pliable dough.

Put the filling on the bottom, leaving about a half of an inch border all around. It should be about 1/2 cup in filling

Vegan Jamaican Beef Patty

Fold the top over to the bottom and press the edges to enclose the filling. Use a fork to crimp the edges and make a cut on the top for ventilation.
